What Is Interstitial Cystitis?
Interstitial cystitis (also known as painful bladder syndrome) is a chronic condition that causes inflammation of the tissue on the bladder wall and tends to occur in young and middle-aged women. The condition may be caused by a defect in the protective cells that line the bladder, which can lead to pain in the bladder or pelvic region along with decreased bladder capacity. Patients who have interstitial cystitis may experience frequent urges to urinate along with pain during sexual intercourse. Although there is not a cure for interstitial cystitis, board-certified OB/GYN Dr. Janice Alexander can provide comprehensive solutions to help you manage your condition. We invite you to reach out to Cedarburg Family Wellness & Aesthetics in Cedarburg, WI so you can get the care you deserve.

How Is Interstitial Cystitis Treated?
Your appointment with Dr. Alexander will take place in a private treatment room at Cedarburg Family Wellness & Aesthetics. She will perform a full pelvic exam and possibly have you undergo a series of diagnostic tests to rule out other conditions and provide the right diagnosis. From there, Dr. Alexander will recommend a personalized plan to improve your condition. She may recommend certain changes to your diet or lifestyle, pelvic floor exercises, bladder training, oral medications, or physical therapy. More advanced treatment techniques include:
- Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS): Mild electrical pulses are used to help strengthen the bladder muscles and reduce pain.
- Bladder distention: A cystoscope is inserted through your urethra, and fluid is used to stretch your bladder capacity.
- Bladder instillation ("bladder wash"): A medication solution is inserted into the bladder through a catheter.
Our team understands that interstitial cystitis can be physically and emotionally debilitating. Our goal is to help you manage your bladder condition and improve your quality of life by providing compassionate care and customized treatments.
