What Is Vaginitis?
A woman's vagina has a natural mix of bacteria and yeast that the body regulates on its own. However, if a bacterial imbalance occurs, it may result in an infection known as vaginitis, an umbrella term for disorders that cause infection and inflammation in the vagina. If you have common signs of vaginitis, such as persistent vaginal itching, irritation, burning, thick discharge, and odor, it's best to get a proper diagnosis from a gynecology professional who can treat your infection to relieve inconvenient symptoms. Board-certified OB/GYN Dr. Janice Alexander provides professional-strength treatments for Cedarburg, WI patients who have many types of vaginitis. Call Cedarburg Family Wellness & Aesthetics to set up a gynecology visit today.

How Is Vaginitis Treated?
Common causes of vaginitis include sexual activity, taking antibiotics, using scented hygiene products (like bubble baths or vaginal sprays), douching, some types of birth control, and wearing tight-fitting clothing. Fortunately, most vaginal infections are relatively simple to address and do not tend to cause other complications when treated correctly. The most common types of vaginitis include:
- Bacterial vaginosis (BV): This infection results from an overgrowth of vaginal bacteria, and the primary symptoms are itching, odor, and vaginal discharge. Some patients have no symptoms.
- Yeast infection: Commonly presents as a thick, white vaginal discharge along with mild to severe itching, burning, or irritation.
- Trichomoniasis: This type of vaginitis is spread through sexual intercourse and can cause itching and a thick, smelly vaginal discharge.
Dr. Alexander will recommend a personalized vaginitis treatment plan, which may involve prescription medication or over-the-counter antifungal creams. She can also provide tips to prevent future infections.
